Leadership Announcement:

Julia Sussman to Transition From CEO Role

Dear Community and Friends,

Firstly, I would like to wish you all a Chag Sukkot Sameach. Sukkot is also known as "z'man simchateinu", the season of our joy - a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewal. In this spirit, I want to share some important news that reflects both appreciation for the past and excitement for the future.

Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of witnessing Julia Sussman’s extraordinary leadership firsthand. Today, I share the news that Julia will be stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Youth HEAR at the end of this year. While this marks the close of a remarkable chapter, it also signals an exciting new beginning, both for Julia and for the organisation.

Julia co-founded Youth HEAR eight years ago with a bold vision: to engage, educate, and empower young people to connect with the Holocaust and confront hate in ways that are relevant, meaningful, and lasting. What began as a seed of an idea has grown into a vibrant multicultural community, fostering critical discussion among young people and inspiring thousands through education and dialogue.

At the heart of this impact is Julia’s extraordinary leadership, unwavering commitment, and deep care. Her dedication has shaped Youth HEAR into what it is today: a space where young people come together to learn, reflect, and build a more compassionate future.

For those of us who have had the privilege of working alongside her, Julia is not just a leader; she is a force. Full of heart, a go-getter in every sense and someone who never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and do the work. She has led with empathy, with purpose and with an unshakable commitment to the mission and to the people around her.

On a personal note, I first met Julia as a colleague and over time, she’s become a close friend, mentor and someone I deeply admire. Julia was the one who first brought me into Youth HEAR six years ago, and I will forever be grateful. She opened the door to this incredible organisation, and in doing so, introduced me to a community and a cause that have become such a meaningful part of my life.

While Julia is stepping down from the CEO role, we are thrilled that she will continue to play a vital role in Youth HEAR’s future. In February 2026, Julia will take on the role of Chair of the Board, as I transition into a Director role. Her knowledge, passion, and strategic vision will continue to be a guiding force for the organisation, and we are excited for this next chapter in Youth HEAR’s leadership.

We are incredibly excited for this new phase and grateful that she will continue to be part of shaping the work and legacy she helped build.

On behalf of the board and the entire Youth HEAR community, to Julia: We thank you. For your heart, your vision, and your tireless commitment to this work. Youth HEAR simply wouldn’t be what it is today without you.

As we look to the future, Youth HEAR is now inviting applications for our next Chief Executive Officer. This is a rare opportunity to lead a bold, young-adult-driven organisation at a pivotal moment of growth. We’re seeking a purpose-led, strategic leader who is passionate about Holocaust education, social justice, and empowering young people to drive change. If you, or someone you know, would be a great fit to shape the next chapter of Youth HEAR, we encourage you to view the full position description and apply.

Wishing you and your families Chag Sukkot Sameach. Our thoughts remain with the hostages and their families. May they return home swiftly, and may our community know safety and peace in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

Simone Starikov
Chairperson, Youth HEAR Board of Directors

A message to you, from Julia

Leading Youth HEAR has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. When we started this organisation in 2018, our vision was to build something lasting, a movement that could outgrow its founders and continue to thrive under new leadership. After eight years guiding this special organisation, including four as CEO, I am proud and confident that we have reached that milestone together.

This was not an easy decision, but it is one to celebrate. It reflects the passion of our volunteers, the unwavering dedication of our staff and board, and the incredible support of our community. Along the way, I have learnt so much, met extraordinary people, and been shaped by Youth HEAR and this journey just as much as I have helped shape it. I am deeply grateful to each of you for walking alongside me and this mission.

After a short break, I look forward to returning as Chair of the Board in February 2026. I love this organisation deeply and am excited to continue contributing to its growth and impact in this new capacity. Youth HEAR has become part of who I am, and I cannot wait to see how it continues to grow and evolve with all of you at its heart. Just as Youth HEAR has shaped me, I know it will continue shaping countless others.

With gratitude and hope,

Julia Sussman
Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer
